Art at Burning Man 1998

Dog Art or Art Dog?

A perfect environment to be creative and do things that might not be possible in our normal urban setting. That is one of many things that I think Burning Man is all about.

Unfortunately my artistic talent is mostly photographic, so I am unable to give to the event as is is happening, but hopefully these pictures help you remember some of the enjoyment that you had while you were there.

The windblown bed at night The Aesthetic Meat Foundation put on a great "bang on metal" percussion event the night of The Burn and trust me, it looked better at night. AMF again. Yes, these were real horses heads, yes they stink, and believe it or not, they even had flies flying around them. Ewww. The Bird in quieter times. Check out my dust storm pictures to see how it held up. I wonder what he's thinking about. Maybe the lack of TV reception in the middle of the desert?

Art Dog or Dog Art? I think this is the only animal that should be allowed out in Black Rock City. Catching a little rest between rides. These guys seemed a little annoyed by the amount of people the first day, but at least the weather didn't seem to bother them. "Come on fellas, here we go again." No greed, no hate, and remember to smile. Something we all could learn from. Why don't you kids come out and play?

One of the many art cars out at Burning Man this year, these guys really seemed to be having a good time. This fire artist was performing before the Opera. She was so fast I couldn't even get a still picture of her! What better place to put out your flaming batons? I am beginning to think this was one of the most visually versatile pieces at Burning Man. Every time I turned around I got to see it in a different way. The Department of Public Works for Black Rock City made a whole bunch of these fire drums and had them all over the playa in case you needed to get warm in the evenings. Plus I think they looked great.

These windmills looked like someone had taken a metal image of The Man and bent it until it danced. After I got back to work, I realized that this is a security camera cover just placed on the ground. Kinda like trapping a piece of sky in the dirt. This was the main road from Center Camp to The Man. I don't know how I captured it completely empty, because I never saw it that way again. The Nebulous Entity. Part art car, part sound sculpture, part participatory experience, and all weird, all cool. Detail from the Nebulous Entity.

The Opera was a great story of fire and power and dancing. Even though the performance was delayed from midnight to nearly 4AM, it was worth the wait. This is a little clearer view of the camp from on top of one of the vans. Check out the Storm section to see how much visibility you can lose in a dust storm. Jesus peeing into rotating beer cans, that make a sculpture do a Monika Lewinski imitation? Just one of the many things you can find in Black Rock City. Hey, we even had golf courses! I found two miniature golf courses, a maxi golf course and a driving range, all for 15,000 people? Good thing this Rubik's cube was solved already because I'd hate to have to turn the pieces!

Art car or just a golden bull? You be the judge. This robotic sculpture had a push button to turn the motor on an off and if you timed it just right, you could make him scrape the ground with his claws. "20" is short for 10-20 which is short for location. Luckily there weren't many dogs out in Black Rock City for this to be much of a problem. This giant Tesla coil did many performances throughout the week, and unless you can hear, smell, feel and see it going off, you are missing out on the whole experience. Made me stop and think.

The Zen room had meditation sessions daily and what better place to contemplate your place in the universe?
